Congratulations! ST MARY CATHEDRAL SCHOOL 2021 DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE RECIPIENT
The St. Mary's School board is pleased to announce that Mary (Urhahn) Ha is the recipient of the 2021 NCEA Distinguished Graduate Award. Mary is a 1968 graduate of St. Mary Cathedral School and a 1972 graduate of Notre Dame High School. She attended Southeast Missouri State University, where she graduated in 1976 with a BS in Secondary Education with a double major in mathematics and Spanish and a teaching minor in French. She soon became a math and foreign language teacher at Zalma and Advance. She taught there for 10 years. In 1986 Mary began teaching at Notre Dame Regional High School. She has taught there 36 years and still is teaching Math, Spanish and French. During her time at Notre Dame she received her Master’s in Natural Sciences from Southeast Missouri State University with emphasis in Math and foreign language. She has taught thousands of students during her 46 years of service to education and I would bet everyone one of them would comment on her dedication to her students. Mary is the daughter of Sylvester and Annie Urhahn and sister of Jake Urhahn, a member of St. Mary’s Parish and Christina Hobbs, member of St. Vincent de Paul parish. Mary married Loi Ha in 1979. Mary and Loi have five children who all attended and graduated from St. Mary Cathedral School and Notre Dame High School. Their children are Thuy, Michael, Aimee, Christy, and Bruce. They have one grandchild, Giulia Grace. They are all very proud of the work their mother and grandmother has done in our community. Mary’s career in education has been very helpful for the community and successful on many levels. Mary has always been involved in the Scholar Bowl community offering tournaments for students over the years. Also, as the department chair for the Foreign Language Department she is also the moderator for the National Spanish Honor Society and National French Honor Society. She is often one of the first to get to Notre Dame and last to leave. Many of her colleagues could also say she is often working with students through her lunch breaks. Her dedication is a beautiful gift to the Notre Dame community. In addition to her time helping in schools, she and her family have been a support for St. Mary Cathedral parish in many ways. Mary’s faith is what directs her actions. She is a daily Mass attendee and sometimes works at the food pantry. Also, shortly after sister-in-law Charlene Urhahn, passed away they started a scholarship in her name for our school. We are proud of all that Mary has done in educating thousands of children in the Southeast Missouri area, particularly at Notre Dame Regional High School. We are extremely proud to recognize Mary Ha as our Distinguished Graduate for 2021.
